KWIECO Non Profit Organisation in Tanzania
December 11, 2013
Fulfilling a dream…
We’ve just returned from KWIECO, a Non Profit Organisation located in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Africa. We flew down to “Kili” (short for Kilimanjaro) to work with the KWIECO team in Trauma Resolution & Intervention. This has been a dream come true for both Rupda & Turiya.

We arrived and were greeted by Angel, an organizer from KWIECO. Angel brought us to our lodging at the foothills of Kilimanjaro, where we were blessed with a remarkable view of the mountain. Each day we awoke, we were greeted by her majestic presents and the nature that surrounds her.
KWIECO stands for Kilimanjaro Women’s Information Exchange & Consultancy Organisation, and for the past 25 years they have been working to improve the condition of Human Rights and Gender in the Kilimanjaro, Tanzania area.

We both, Turiya & Rupda, went to Tanzania to help support the counsellors who work directly with the victims of violence and other types of human rights issues, such as FGM. Our training was designed to educate them in how to work with traumatised victims. Needless to say, the experience was enlightening for us all.
Trauma Resolution & Intervention has been practised worldwide. Using some of the tools found in Somatic Experiencing® (SE), created by Dr Peter Levine, we can now teach others to recognise and work with trauma related symptoms. Knowledge of trauma patterns can help ease traumatic reactions, as well as, potentially prevent symptoms developing after an overwhelming traumatic event.

Somatic Experiencing™ is a naturalistic approach to the understanding and healing of trauma. SE™ is a clinical methodology discovered by observing animals in the wild and why they are not traumatised by routine threats to their lives while humans, on the other hand, are readily overwhelmed and traumatised.
Fortunately, the very same instincts (and related survival based brain systems) that are involved in the formation of trauma symptoms can be enlisted in the transformation and healing of trauma. Therapeutically, this “instinct to heal” and can be self-regulated by engaging awareness through body sensations that contradict those of paralysis and helplessness, and which restore resilience, equilibrium and wholeness.

The success rate in SE®, is so high that the practice is being used by thousands today, both professionally and individually. Combined with Trauma Resolution & Intervention and SE® we use these techniques and understandings in much of our other related work. Such as…
Healing Trauma spiritual retreat is a workshop that covers the foundational understanding of how trauma is held in our bodies, and how to work with anxiety, stress and the daily overwhelm in our lives.
KWIECO non-profit organisation is unique, in that we are teaching the counsellors who work with the individuals and not the individuals themselves. Our Trauma Resolution & Intervention training is designed for this in mind, and can be brought to NGO’s & NPO’s interested in this type of resolution and reconciliation in their organisation and communities.
The KWIECO staff have become our new extended family in Africa and their vision to help support those in challenging, and often life threatening circumstances, has touched our lives deeply.

We are greatly honoured to be a part of the KWIECO non-profit organisation and hope that we can continue to work with them each year. To, Elizabeth Minde, founder, Managing Director and Advocate for KWIECO, Betty, thank you so much for everything. You are an amazing woman and an inspiration to many across the globe for the work that you do, and continue to do, over the last 25 years.
In addition, you have made us feel right at home at KWIECO and your staff has welcomed us into the KWIECO family. Being with you all has left a mark on our hearts and we shall never forget the precious time we shared together. Both of us very much look forward to being with you all again soon!
with love and respect,
Rupda & Turiya
